Scotland - Space In The UK

Higher Education

Space Technology Centre

World-leading research on spacecraft technology has been going on in the School of Computing at the University of Dundee for over a decade. This has led to the SpaceWire standard, which is being used in many spacecraft by space organisations across the world and the PANGU planet and asteroid simulation tool, which is being used by ESA to help design navigation systems for future planetary landers. Environmental data from satellites has been received at Dundee since 1978, resulting in an extremely valuable archive of data for environmental change monitoring and other applications.

UK Astronomy Technology Centre

The UK ATC (part of the Science and Technology Facilities Council) is the national centre for astronomical technology - both ground and space based. They design and build instruments and telescopes, principally for astronomy but with applications in earth observation and elsewhere. Their range of expertise covers: optics, opto-mechanics, cryogenics, cryo-mechanisms/robotics, detectors, control electronics, embedded software/firmware, application software, and systems engineering. This has led to work on MIRI (James Webb Space Telescope) and SPIRE (Herschel Space Observatory), with a history of building space instrumentation as far back as ISOCAM/ISOPHOT (Infrared Space Observatory) in the late 80's. They also project-manage international collaborations.

Space in the UK

The UK has a thriving space community, click on the map to locate space-related companies, technology providers and universities offering space courses in your region. Some of the organisations have STEM ambassadors who will work with schools and colleges to encourage more pupils to study STEM subjects and also tell them about the exciting career opportunities in the high growth space sector.
