Work with astronauts and NASA leaders for a week

08. 06. 11

The International Space School Educational Trust (ISSET) is hosting Mission Discovery. It will enable young people to work with and be accompanied for a week by Mike McCulley, former NASA astronaut, Jay Honeycutt, former Director of NASA’s Kennedy Space Centre, Michelle Ham, a lead NASA astronaut trainer and Ian Jones, a satellite communications expert and inventor.

During the week-long programme the young people will work in teams to come up with an idea to be carried out in space, the best idea will be selected, built by ISSET, launched from Kazakhstan on a Progress Mission and taken to the International Space Station.

The Mission Discovery programme includes NASA leadership and team building, how you fulfil your dreams and ambitions, how space exploration benefits the earth, the environment of space, the experience of being in space, what makes a great experiment, budgeting, presentation skills and the whole programme is orientated to inculcate the NASA ‘you can do it’ spirit.

Mission Discovery is important in that it enables young people to work for a week with a team of fantastically successful people who have all come from humble origins. Our astronaut and the NASA leaders are living role models of how hard work and persistence in STEM can enable the fulfilling of dreams and ambitions.

Mission Discovery brings the best of NASA team work and leadership to the young people and also introduces them to the amazing opportunity of having their ideas taken into space to be carried out. This inspirational opportunity illustrates that if you are creative, you can work in a team and you can present your ideas, then anything is possible.

Mission Discovery is to take place at Imperial College London in the week 1 - 5 August 2011. It is open to young people aged 14 and above. The cost of the programme is £294 + VAT.

You can either inform the pupils of the opportunity to attend Mission Discovery or your school could form your own teams, accompanying teachers can attend the programme for free.
