UK-ESERO at the National Eisteddfod

18. 08. 10

The National Eisteddfod of Wales took place in Ebbw Vale from July 31st to August 8th, and attracted over 100,000 visitors this year. Around 1,000 people participated in astronomy activities in the Science Tent, where UK-ESERO was working with Dark Sky Wales (DSW) to promote STEM subjects. DSW ran a number of hands-on activities over the week, featuring robotics and (when the weather permitted!) solar observing.

The National Eisteddfod promotes the Welsh language, and so UK-ESERO displays were translated into Welsh for use at the event, and a native speaker (Dr. Sarah Roberts of the Faulkes Telescope Project, University of Glamorgan) was on hand to help explain things to visitors.

Dr. Paul Roche (UK-ESERO Space Ambassador for Wales, Cardiff University and University of Glamorgan) said “We’re very pleased to be supporting the astronomy and space outreach programme at this year’s Eisteddfod, in collaboration with Dark Sky Wales and the Science and Technology Facilities Council. The Eisteddfod is always an excellent venue for engaging people with Wales’ role in space and astronomy research”.

UK-ESERO in Wales is working closely with DSW and the Faulkes Telescope Project to offer STEM-based educational programmes, both in English and, wherever possible, in the Welsh language as well.
