New report from the Oxford Economics consultancy shows the strength of the UK space sector

08. 11. 10

The latest "Size and Health" report was commissioned by the UK Space Agency and is based on a survey of the activities of 260 leading companies. The report found that UK space companies have defied the recession and grown by an average of 10% a year since 2007.

The total turnover for the UK space industry is now said to be in the region of £7.5bn, with employment rising by about 15% a year. While there has been low annual growth of 3% in the upstream sector (e.g. satellite manufacturing), the greatest rise in growth has been seen in the downstream sector (e.g. satellite broadcasting and telecommunications).

The UK space sector recently set out a 20-year vision for itself called the Space Innovation and Growth Strategy (S-IGS), in this, the industry called for government to increase its investment, claiming that - were this to happen - the UK space sector could create up to 100,000 new UK jobs in space-related activity and grow revenues to £40bn a year.
