New evidence of flowing water found on Mars

05. 08. 11

Using data collected from NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO), the MRO team has presented images of dark lines forming seasonally on the slopes of Mars' mid-southern latitudes, strong evidence of seasonal water flows on Mars.

While there is significant evidence of flowing water, the team did state that there is no direct detection of water since it evaporates quickly on Mars. HIRISE Principal Investigator Alfred McEwen explained how researchers will need to re-create Mars-like conditions in the lab to better understand these flow markings (visible in the image below as dark-coloured finger-like prominences). McEwen stated "it's a mystery now, but I think it's a solvable mystery with further observations and laboratory experiments".
