New 3D map shows the universe in its greatest detail yet

27. 05. 11

A map has been created using data gathered in the southern hemisphere by the 1.2m Schmidt telescope in Siding Springs, Australia, and in the northern hemisphere by the 1.2m telescope at the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory in Arizona.

The map - named the 2MASS Redshift Survey (2MRS) - shows the distribution of approximately 45,000 galaxies and the dark matter that make up the local universe up to 380 million light years away. The map even shows more distant objects, lying about 1 billion light years away from Earth.

The map is the most detailed view of our universe ever assembled, and has been created in 3D.
