Irish stargazers on the hunt for a meteor

31. 08. 11

On Monday 22 August a meteor crashed into Ireland, Astronomy Ireland are now on the hunt for the missing meteor and believe it is likely to have landed in the Sligo region. They have urged anyone who saw the meteor fall or hitting the ground to get in touch on their website so they can best assess where it might be found; Chairman David Moore wants to make sure any potential evidence is not missed.

Experts estimate that one meteor a year probably hits Ireland, however they usually fall during the daytime, often on overcast days, hence making them very easy to detect - the last meteor was located in 1999, and fragments of that one sold at 50 times the then price of gold due to the huge demand for its rare fragments. This most recent meteor was unique in that it crashed during the night time so offers the best hope of witnesses who can suggest its location, hence leading to its discovery.

Reports of any sightings can be logged on the Astronomy Ireland website.
