First image of Mercury taken by Messenger probe

29. 03. 11

NASA's Messenger spacecraft, now in orbit around Mercury, has delivered back the first images of its host planet.

The image shows the very prominent Debussy crater (towards the top of the image) as well as parts of Mercury's surface (the bottom portion of the image) that have never been seen before by spacecraft.

Hundreds of images have already been snapped and will be released by NASA in due course.
