Two Amazing Moons

England (South East)

09. 05. 11

8.00pm

The two tiny moons of Mars, Phobos and Deimos, are the stuff of legend. Was their existence really predicted by Kepler, by Jonathan Swift in Gulliver’s Travels and by Voltaire many years before their discovery? Did an eminent astrophysicist actually claim that they are hollow and were placed there by aliens? And, as many books claim, are they in fact captured asteroids?

New evidence has transformed our view of these two tiny bodies, and in the next few years it’s even planned to land a spacecraft on Phobos. Why is there so much interest in these rocky moons? Dr Emily Baldwin, Deputy Editor of Astronomy Now, has been studying them and will be telling attendees the full story at this May meeting. Emily is also Chief Stargazer for the SPA’s Young Stargazers!

Venue: St John’s Ambulance Hall, North Harrow
