Exoplanets: The search for planets beyond our solar system

A free seminar offered by the Institute of Physics, and co-organised with the Royal Astronomical Society.

The seminar will explore the various direct and indirect methods that have enabled exoplanet discovery, such as transit observations that detect the reduction in a star’s brightness as an exoplanet passes in front. Investigation of other planetary systems provides insights into their formation and evolution, as well as what the future may hold for
our own solar system.

The seminar will also discuss observations of exoplanets within the habitable or “Goldilocks” zone, defined as the distance from a star at which water can exist in a liquid state. Exoplanets within this zone are of increasing interest as they are the most likely candidates for harbouring life outside of our solar system.

Venue: Institute of Physics, Portland Place, London.
