Space Academy Science Teacher INSET - KS3 & 4 Chemistry

An INSET day organised by the National Space Centre and the European Space Agency and based on activities developed as part of the Space Academy programme. This will be an all-day teacher masterclass focused on using the inspirational context of Martian exploration to enhance attendee subject knowledge as well as providing a host of relevant curriculum-focused hands-on activities that can be implemented immediately in the classroom.

Attendees will also receive a data stick with digital resources to accompany the course and will have the opportunity to see "We are Astronomers", the official 2009 International Year of Astronomy "fulldome" planetarium show produced by the National Space Centre.

During the course of a day of chemical exploration with light sticks, magic snow, dry ice, rocket motors and Martian soil, delegates will meet novel ways of teaching:

- Rates of reaction
- Indicators and pH
- Inorganic analysis
- Structure and bonding
- Chemical energetics

The course tutors are Steve Althorpe and Judith Green, who are currently seconded as Lead Educators to the Space Academy Partnership between the National Space Centre, Universities of Nottingham and Leicester, Science Learning Centre East Midlands and STEMNET. They also both teach science full-time at Robert Smyth School in Market Harborough where Steve is Head of Science and Judith is a Chemistry Advanced Skills Teacher.

Cost: £45 (including refreshments, lunch and resources). This INSET is eligible for Science Learning Centre East Midlands Impact Awards. As part of this partnership the Science Learning Centre East Midlands may offer Impact Awards of £200 per day for each qualified teacher from a maintained school attending this CPD course.
