Space Academy Science Teacher INSET - BTEC and GCSE Applied Science

An INSET day organised by the National Space Centre and the European Space Agency and based on activities developed as part of the Space Academy programme. This will be an all-day teacher masterclass focused on using the inspirational context of space to enhance attendee subject knowledge as well as providing a host of relevant curriculum-focused hands-on activities that can be implemented immediately in the classroom.

Attendees will also receive a data stick with digital resources on which can be used to support GCSE and BTEC courses and will have the opportunity to see "We are Astronomers", the official 2009 International Year of Astronomy "fulldome" planetarium show produced by the National Space Centre.

Curriculum topics covered include:

- Human impacts on the environment
- Acceleration calculations
- Mapping out the solar system
- Interdependence
- Space Shuttle chemistry for balancing equations
- The search for life on other planets
- Endothermic and exothermic reactions
- The electromagnetic spectrum and its uses
- New materials and rocket design

The course tutor is Ruth Williamson - currently a Lead Educator and Teacher of Science at the Priory Academy LST in Lincoln.

Cost: £35 (including refreshments, lunch and resources). For East Midlands teachers, bursaries (£200 per participant) are available to cover course and supply/travel costs. These are subject to post-INSET evaluation completion.
