The next Café Scientifique event will explore the wonder of stars using some of the latest astronomical images.

Guest speaker Dr. Paul Ruffle is a visiting research fellow in the Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics at the University of Manchester. Prior to this appointment he worked in the USA for the National Radio Astronomy Observatory as a support scientist on the 100 metre Green Bank Telescope. Paul is currently investigating the different modes of star formation in the most distant low metallicity molecular cloud in the Milky Way. Paul started his working life as a graphic artist, then got involved with the electronic publishing revolution, multimedia and the internet. He obtained a physics degree with the Open University and then completed a PhD in astrophysics at the University of Manchester.

This talk will explore how stars form in clouds of molecular gas and dust; how they then evolve and synthesise the elements that make life possible; and how at the end of their lives, they return this material to the interstellar medium for the next generation of stars, either as red giants and planetary nebulae or more catastrophically as exploding supernovae.

Café Scientifique is an informal evening of lively discussion revolving around contemporary scientific issues of the day. Each meeting begins with a short talk from an invited science-related speaker, followed by up to an hour of open discussion including a Q & A session. Everyone is welcome to attend and express their views, or to just enjoy a drink and listen. No scientific knowledge is assumed and everyone can participate.
